An influential US lawmaker, planning to contest next year’s presidential vote, has voiced support for bringing home troops from Afghanistan.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, announced last week her plans to challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.
In an interview with MSNBC television, she said: “I think it is right to get our troops out of Syria and let me add, I think it is right to get our troops out of Afghanistan, ”
As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Warren has a say in military matters. Her view reflects the pressure for a troop pullout from Afghanistan felt in Republican and Democratic parties.
However, she took issue with Trump’s abrupt announcements on such sensitive issues. Policies should not be conducted via Twitter, the legislator said.
Warren suggested consultation with partners on such important issues. “We actually need to plan this out and talk about it with our allies to ensure more safety and stability in the region.”
