The US special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation has arrived in China in an effort to facilitate an intra-Afghan political settlement.
Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad tweeted: “I am meeting with Chinese officials on our effort to facilitate peace in Afghanistan.” He wrote China had an important role in the process.
Earlier, in another tweet, Khalilzad said: “Unexpected flight delays prevented me from getting to Kabul yesterday. Luckily, I was able to meet Afghan NSA Hamdullah Mohib and new envoy to Pakistan Atif Mashal.”
However, he did not provide details of the meeting with Mohib and Mashal.
On Wednesday, Khalilzad embarked on a 14-day visit to India, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan to meet senior government officials in each country to facilitate an inter-Afghan political settlement.
