Maulana Samiul Haq welcomed Trump’s offer of direct talks with the Afghan Taliban

An influential Pakistani cleric has hailed the Trump administration’s offer of direct talks with the Afghan Taliban.

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islami-S chief Maulana Samiul Haq welcomed the US overture as a pragmatic move.
He said talks were the only way to restore peace in Afghanistan.
The US should acknowledge the fact the Taliban were a political and military reality in the conflict-torn country, he said in a statement on Wednesday.
The JUI-S chief also underlined the need for finding a way of an honourable US pullout from Afghanistan.
