“An Afghan government delegation and a Taliban delegation will hold talks in Saudi Arabia,” the diplomat said Monday on condition of remaining anonymous.
The Afghan envoy did not provide a timeframe for the talks between the two sides.
However, Afghan media reports say Kabul will initiate negotiations in Saudi Arabia before establishing a Taliban liaison office in Qatar.
The Afghan High Peace Council has said that the meeting in Saudi Arabia doesn't aim at hampering the Qatar process. The council says some negotiations will be held in Turkey.
Meanwhile, the Afghan government says it has not officially been informed about the talks and no steps have been yet been taken to start talks in Saudi Arabia.
“No practical steps have been taken to start talks in Saudi Arabia, it has only been a suggestion,” Akim Hasher, head of the Government Media and Information Centre, said.
The new move comes weeks after the US acknowledged that it has held discussions about opening a Taliban liaison office in the Qatari capital, Doha.
According to media reports, top US officials have reportedly held several rounds of secret talks with the militant group.
The talks are part of Washington's strategy of withdrawing troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
