“The UN is willing to help more and more,” Mr. Kubiš told Governor Atta Mohammad Noor.
“We will be actively supporting - both from the central and the provincial levels - the processes happening here,” he added, calling Mazar a “vibrant” city which reflects the strong leadership of the local government.
Governor Noor praised the UN presence in the region for “close and honest cooperation” with provincial authorities and the people.
Mr. Kubiš also met with the head of the provincial council and the provincial director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He spoke with the heads of UN agencies, funds and programmes active in the region, and with some staff members who had assembled despite yesterday being a day off.
The visit to the region was Mr. Kubiš’s first since taking over as head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). On Thursday, he met with officials in Kandahar.
