Mattis: Privatizing Afghanistan war not a wise idea
Defense Secretary James Mattis told a Pentagon news conference on Tuesday: “When the Americans put their nation’s credibility on the line, privatizing it is probably not a wise idea.”
Erik Prince, the Blackwater founder, has suggested replacing most US troops in Afghanistan with private contractors -- an idea that has been opposed by Kabul.
US media outlets quoted the defense secretary as saying that the American military personnel remained in the 17-year war to ensure its homeland security.
He added: “This is why we talk about an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned reconciliation process and we believe that the best way to get there is to ensure the Taliban recognise they can’t win on the battlefield…”
Mattis once again urged the insurgents to come to the negotiating table and discuss with the Afghan government the country’s future.
